Meetings and Educational Programs

Educational programs are held in conjunction with our monthly meetings.   They usually run about 45 minutes and are followed by a general membership meeting.

Some recent topics have included:

  • Soil – It’s Not Just Dirt – improving  soil  for good  plant health.
  • Saving  Seeds  and  Starting Seeds Indoors
  • Vermiculture – Composting  with Worms
  • Beekeeping and How to  Start
  • Foraging for Edible  Mushrooms
  • Organic Gardening Methods

Monday, February 5

South Woodstock Baptist Church

Amelia South will speak to the club about Wild Edible Plants and bring some examples at the club meeting on Mon. Feb. 5th.

 

Amelia South is a Practicing Master Herbalist and Professional Forager who lives on her small organic farm in Killingly. She started foraging in 2006 when she lived in Washington State and noticed an abundance of wild blackberries growing along every roadside. Since then, she has studied herbal medicine and taught herself how to identify and eat hundreds of wild plants and mushrooms, and she is always learning more! She teaches classes online as well as teaching personal and group foraging walks around Connecticut.

Speaker Dawn Pettinelli, UCONN Associate Extension Educator, will give a presentation on Soil for Gardeners and discuss soil, nutrients and fertilizers.

In addition to our speaker, the Nominating Committee will be presenting the slate of candidates for the November elections.

Tuesday, October 22 – Floral Design School

South Woodstock Baptist Church

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

The purpose is to improve our floral arranging skills and eventually enter arrangements in shows, such as the Woodstock Fair or the Connecticut Flower Show. This date is open to members interested in floral design. $25/person. Sign up is required and can be found HERE. Deadline to sign up is Oct. 12.

 

Monday, November 4th – Elections & Presentation

Our Annual Business meeting/election and discussing/voting on proposed Bylaws. In order to provide ample time for discussion, we will not be having a guest speaker. Merch store purchases will be available for pickup at the meeting, provided orders were placed in time for the printer to complete them.
